Pigeons Are Attracted to These 4 Parts of Your Home

Pigeons Are Attracted to These 5 Parts of Your HomePigeons are one of the more common household pests around. While they may not be as invasive as certain animals, they’re noisy and leave a lot of mess behind, especially when found roosting in parts of the home.

It’s very unlikely to find a pigeon nesting inside of your house – unless it flies through an open window – but there are parts of your home where they are commonly attracted to.

Here are 4 parts of your homes that might attract pigeons:

Solar Panels
Solar panels are a new addition to most properties and offer a host of advantages, namely being a source of renewable energy, yet there is one notable drawback of having them installed on your roof – pigeons love solar panels for nesting!

Many solar panel owners are learning about this problem, with pigeon nests frequently developing beneath solar panels. The panels offer the perfect roosting conditions for the birds, including ample cover from the elements and predators.

One solution is to have bird barriers or other bird-proofing solutions installed, although removing a nest that has already appeared is quite the hassle. Plus, pigeons may lower solar panel efficiency by covering the glass with droppings, while there is also the chance of damaging components around their nests.

Ledges and Balconies
Window ledges and balconies are another common area of your house that may attract pigeons, especially for daytime perching. This results in several pigeons resting on your window ledge or balcony and making all kinds of noise and leaving droppings on the building fascia.

The reason pigeons are attracted to these areas is because it offers a good view of the surrounding area, allowing them to scope out food sources that they can exploit. In many cases the food is something homeowners have left outside, such as food for other birds or exposed trash in bins.

Gutters
Similar to ledges and balconies, pigeons are attracted to gutters mostly for daytime perching, meaning they won’t usually nest in these areas. However, they do sit here during the day waiting on the chance to find food and avoiding any predators lurking on the ground.

One big issue this may cause is blockages in your guttering, as pigeon droppings, nesting materials, and other debris accumulate in the gutter.

Air Conditioner Units
Pigeons are commonly found roosting and nesting in and around air conditioning units, which offer them good shelter and plenty of warmth. They’ll often make a lot of noise when nesting under an air conditioner, while they often nest in any exposed areas inside the unit itself.

This can cause significant damage to the air conditioning system. For example, droppings can lower air quality and clog up your filters, while nesting materials are known to cause compressors to fail. Sometimes they even peck off insulation for nesting materials!
